Colorful, lovely, sometimes silly creatures I created to find and give the world some beauty during the long months of the coronavirus pandemic.
During the isolation of the coronavirus pandemic, I thought it important to put out hopeful messages through my art to aid people ground themselves through beauty and color and simplicity. It’s part of my Absurdist Hope philosophy that I learned from reading the works of Albert Camus.
After doing pencil and pen and ink drawings, I felt a need to return to color as the first winter of the virus started to descend. I chose to paint sea creatures and goldfish. To be open to the simple beauty of color in my daily life I’ve found that can help one’s mood. To appreciate color on some of the world’s beautiful creatures is that much better.
These paintings were my way back to a love for the possibilities to make the world a better place beyond the horrors of a global pandemic and so much unrest. Yes, they are simple, they are lovely and not as intellectual as much of my past work, but that is the point. We must seek out beauty, joy, simplicity, and grace in our time on earth. To do otherwise results in a slow death of our hearts, our world, and our humanity.
