Acrylic paint, amber shellac on metal road signs.

How they were made:

These pieces were made by layering acrylic paint and coverings of amber shellac in succession.  In the process, the signs' words are obscured , highlighted, and added too as the composition is finalized.  The shellac is used to obscure and highlight aspects of the composition as well as changing colors that are added before, in-between and after the shellac is applied.  Combining these mediums help form a piece that has more depth and nuance than if only paint were used.  Because of the shiny and reflective nature of the signs themselves, the work glows and fades depending on the light conditions and the position from which they are viewed.  In this way, the work creates different readings whenever it is seen giving it a life of its own.
